George Clooney and Matt Charman developing Watergate series

December 16, 2017 by Ricky Church

George Clooney will be diving back into the political drama as he and Bridge of Spies writer Matt Charman develop a limited eight-episode series based on the infamous Watergrate scandal. The series has reportedly gone to Netflix, though that may change as competition for it rises.

Watergate was one of the biggest events to have happened in America during the 1970s. After a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters on June 17, 1972, the investigation eventually led back to President Richard Nixon and his knowledge and attempted cover-up of the crime. The scandal led to him resigning from office.

The series is said to follow an individual who was significantly part of the Watergate scandal in each episode, following such players like Attorney General John Mitchell and Nixon counsel John Ehrlichman. The Watergate series will also be modelled after the Japanese drama Rashomon.

Clooney will produce through his Smokehouse Pictures company alongside his partner Grant Heslov. Clooney is also working an a limited series adaptation of the Joseph Heller classical novel, Catch 22, over at Paramount.
