Green Day’s American Idiot reportedly greenlighted by HBO

October 9, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has revealed to NME that their long-gestating movie adaptation of American Idiot has received the green light from HBO, and will see Armstrong reprising his role as St. Jimmy from the Broadway production.

“That’s the plan right now, yeah,” said Armstrong. “We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”

Green Day’s seventh album, American Idiot was released in 2004, and was followed by the musical of the same name in 2009. A movie adaptation has been in the works for several years, with playwright Rolin Jones penning the script and Michael Mayer attached to direct.
