Groovy! Evil Dead Rise moves from streaming to theatrical release

August 25, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Too often we’re bemoaning the fact a film will debut on a streaming service rather than the silver screen, and that was to be the fate of the fifth movie in the Evil Dead franchise, which was all set to premiere exclusively on HBO Max later this year. However, word reaches us today that the Deadites will now crawl their way into theatres, as Evil Dead Rise gets an April 21, 2023 release date.

Producer and original orchestrator of the Necronomicon nastiness Sam Raimi claimed that Evil Dead Rise would “knock people’s socks off”, and it appears that those making the decisions during the great Warner Bros. Discovery shake-up agree with him.

Shifting the horror from a cabin-in-the-woods to downtown L.A., Evil Dead Rise is hoping to reinvent the franchise by telling the story of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Were you hoping to watch this from the comfort of your own cabin, or are you glad that you’ll be able to watch the 6,500 litres of blood used in production unleased on the biggest screen possible? Let us know what you think of this news by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth….

In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

Evil Dead Rise is directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) and stars Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), Lily Sullivan (Mental), Morgan Davies (The End), Nell Fisher (Northspur), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence) and Mia Challis (Clickbait). Franchise creator Sam Raimi and Ash star Bruce Campbell executive produce.

Evil Dead Rise lands in theatres on April 21st, 2023.
