Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn doesn’t care about Marvel vs DC rivalry

September 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

We may be experiencing the Golden Age of the superhero movie, but there are a large number of fans who remain loyal to their respective brand, be it Marvel or DC, and are fiercely critical of anything put out by the “other side”. Occasionally, the fires of this “rivalry” are stoked by someone involved with either the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Extended Universe – such as David Ayer’s comments at the Suicide Squad premiere – but one person who has little interest in the “Marvel vs. DC war” is Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

“I just don’t find any room in my headspace for thinking my movies are superior or inferior to someone else’s,” Gunn told Variety. “I really just think about how can I make, for instance right now, how can I make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 the greatest spectacle film of all time? That’s all I care about so that’s what I concentrate on. I don’t really think about Marvel versus DC. And also any time a Marvel movie comes out that isn’t as good as I wished it was or anytime a DC movie comes out that isn’t as I wished it was, I’m disappointed because I love these characters. I grew up reading Marvel and DC comics. I want them all to be good.”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
