Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 heading for massive US box office opening weekend

May 4, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is all set for a huge take at the box office this weekend when it makes its US domestic bow.

Opening in numerous overseas territories last week, the sequel to the 2014 Marvel sci-fi hit has already accumulated an impressive $132 million.

And this is all without the world’s second biggest market, China, which is due to welcome the movie this weekend along with the US.

Predictions are incredibly high for Vol.2 in its native country, with estimates putting its receipts in the range of $150 million – $170 million. More conservative predictions from its studio see it coming in at $140 million.

If these estimates hold out, these will be impressive numbers indeed, putting the film well ahead of the $94 million dollars received by the first film, and within shouting distance of the fourth biggest MCU domestic opening, Iron Man 3 ($174 million).

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is out now and sees director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Laura Haddock (Meredith Quill) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface, Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) as Tullk and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) as Stakar.
