Guillermo del Toro plans to step away from live-action films to focus on animation

June 16, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Following his Academy Award win with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the legendary filmmaker is looking to move to the world of animation even more.

While conducting a MasterClass at Annecy Animated Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro broke the news that he will soon wind down his time with live-action filmmaking and move his efforts to animation.

The filmmaker told those in attendance, “There are a couple more live-action movies I want to do but not many. After that, I only want to do animation. That’s the plan.”

One of the planned final live-action movies from Guillermo del Toro is Frankenstein, which he’s slated to shoot this summer with Mia Goth (Pearl), Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight), and Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way Home) tipped for roles.

Later in his Masterclass, del Toro turns his attention to his love of animation and how he feels major modern studios have lessened their value. “Animation, to me, is the purest form of art, and it’s been kidnapped by a bunch of hoodlums. We have to rescue it. [And] I think that we can Trojan-horse a lot of good shit into the animation world,” says del Toro.

Del Toro already has his next animated project lined up; he’ll once again team with Netflix to tackle The Buried Giant, based on the fantasy novel by Nobel Prize-winning British writer Kazuo Ishiguro.
