Happy Death Day star Jessica Rothe discusses the future of the horror franchise

October 12, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Although director Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day series is currently on hold right now after the release of 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U, the franchise lead Jessica Rothe has discussed the possibility of a third instalment – which the director has revealed its working title is Happy Death Day To Us.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rothe opened up about wanting to make that final movie in the trilogy and the importance of her character Tree Gelbman as a role model for young women.

“It feels very important to both Chris and I that if we do have the opportunity to make a third film and finish the trilogy and finish Tree’s story, we want to do it right,” Rothe said. “I feel so much love and so much deep protection over her as a character, her as a final girl and her as a role model for young women and people of all ages. So I would never want us to sacrifice her story and her journey just to make it something smaller than it deserves to be. Making any kind of follow-up film is always really tricky since you want to make sure it lands the right tone and in the right place. So I’ll be interested to see if we’re lucky enough to find that right place and find the right way to conclude that story.”

Rothe continued to discuss her experience of working with Landon while revealing that she would work with him on any project whether it is Happy Death Day to Us or any other project.

“Chris Landon’s brain works in so many brilliant and unpredictable ways, and so I’m sure that title knocked around in his brain for a while. But I would follow him to the ends of the Earth, whether it’s on a Happy Death Day Tree, Happy Death Day to Us or a different project. I just think that he is one of a kind.”

While there is nothing official in the works at the moment, producer Jason Blum has previously stated he is “working overtime” to get a third Happy Death Day instalment into production.

The original 2017 Happy Death Day follows Tree (Rothe) who relives the same day every time she is murdered on her birthday, forcing her to uncover the masked killer’s identity and stop the time loop. The second film featured another masked killer while also expanding on the world and introducing an alternate dimension storyline, reminiscent of Back to the Future Part II. Happy Death Day 2U also ended with a post-credits scene that could lead to a possible sci-fi future for the franchise.
