Hawkeye director hoped to include Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man

November 29, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Marvel Studios launched its latest TV series this past week with the Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld-led Hawkeye, and during a promotional interview with The Playlist director Rhys Thomas has revealed which of Renner’s Avengers co-stars he’d hoped to include in the show.

“I don’t want to reveal anything because we do kinda get to introduce [some characters], but here’s one: Ant-Man,” said Thomas, who directed both of the first two episodes along with the series finale. “Paul Rudd and Jeremy’s dynamic together I enjoy. I enjoyed their press tour dynamic when they were on the Avengers run. So he was a character that felt like a fun way to play at the absurdity of Clint’s situation, but I did get to have a little nod to that.”

It’s a shame that a Scott Lang appearance never came off, but as Thomas notes, ‘Ant-Man’ did make a cameo of sorts in the Hawkeye series premiere, with the character included as part of the Avengers roster in the stage show Rogers: The Musical, while an Ant-Man cosplayer also popped up alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Katniss Everdeen in episode two.

Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.

Hawkeye sees Jeremy Renner returning as Clint Barton alongside Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) as Kate Bishop, Florence Pugh (Black Widow) as Yelena Belova, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) as Eleanor Bishop, Fra Fee (Les Miserables) as Kazi, Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul) as Jack Duquesne, Zahn McClarnon (Fargo) as William Lopez, newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, and Jolt as Lucky the Pizza Dog.

Hawkeye airs on Disney+ on Wednesdays.
