Henry Cavill explains why Superman had to kill Zod in Man of Steel

July 11, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Henry Cavill has explained why he believes Zod had to die in Man of Steel.

All these years later, the death of Zod at the hands of Superman in Man of Steel is still a point of contention. After all, Superman isn’t supposed to kill. But at the climax of Zack Snyder’s movie, the hero was faced with an impossible decision and made a choice.

Some people weren’t happy about this decision but Henry Cavill, the actor behind the DCEU’s Superman, believes it had to happen. Speaking to Square Mile, the actor said: “The killing of Zod would have led to a wonderful reason why Superman never kills. Not, he never kills just because his dad said so one day. He made the decision himself because of an impossible scenario, to which he then said, ‘I don’t care if it’s impossible again, I’m gonna find a way to make it possible in the impossible.’”

What do you think of Cavill’s reasoning? Does the act of killing Zod in that moment provide a better justification for why he would never want to do it again?
