Sad news for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After working on the Buffy: New Sunnydale for the past couple of years, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chloe Zhao’s revival.
Gellar announced the news on her Instagram account that the streamer decided not to pick the series up after filming the pilot. Plot details were scarce, but it would have seen Buffy training the next generation’s Slayer, a young woman named Nova played by Star Wars: Skeleton Crew‘s Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
Zhao approached Gellar to reprise her iconic role with a script written by Poker Face‘s Nora and Lilla Zuckerman with Zhao directing the pilot. According to reports, Hulu was not satisfied with the pilot and despite talks of reworking story elements they decided to opt out of the revival but are still committed to bringing Buffy back in other ways.
“I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots,” Gellar said in her announcement. “And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means, not only to me, but to all of you. This doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes… you can still beep me.”

Fans can see Gellar on the big screen in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come when it releases this Friday, March 20th, while Zhao’s latest film Hamnet is nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, which will air later tonight.
