Ice Cube sets deal to write and star in Last Friday

April 6, 2025 by Gary Collinson

Almost a quarter of a century on since the previous instalment, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema finally seem ready to move ahead with the long-awaited fourth Friday, with THR revealing that Ice Cube has officially signed on to write and star in Last Friday.

The deal was announced by New Line president Richard Brener in an interview with the trade, and follows on from comments made by Ice Cube last year that he was hopeful that Warner Bros. would give the project the go ahead under the new stewardship of co-chief Michael De Luca, who was president of production at New Line and oversaw the original Friday trilogy during his tenure.

Directed by F. Gary Gray, the first film saw Ice Cube playing unemployed slacker Craig Jones, who spends an eventful Friday with his friend and small time drug dealer Smokey (Chris Tucker). While Tucker would sit out the sequels, Ice Cube and much of the supporting cast returned for the 2000 sequel Next Friday, while Ice Cube and the late John Witherspoon were back for 2002’s Friday After Next. A short-lived animated series also aired on MTV2 in 2007.

Are you pleased that a fourth (and final?) Friday is in the works? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
