Imagine secures rights to belly of the beast scuba-diving drama Whalefall

August 2, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Ron Howard clearly has a thing for whales, because the In The Heart of the Sea director’s production company Imagine Entertainment has harpooned the rights to Whalefall, the critically-acclaimed novel by Daniel Kraus.

According to Deadline Imagine will begin developing Whalefall once the current strikes have reached their conclusion.

Whalefall, which is due to be published by MTV Books on August 8th, tells the story of a scuba diver searching for his dead father’s remains, when he gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and is left with just one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. It’s a fable about a young man who has given up on life, only to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

Described as a cross between The Martian and 127 Hours in pre-release reviews, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes mean that no writers or talent have been attached to the project.

Author Kraus is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Guillermo Del Toro on The Shape of Water and Trollhunters.
