Director Dean Fleischer Camp had a much more challenging task when bringing Lilo & Stitch to life than I ever thought. Not only was translating the rich visuals and fun characters near impossible, but who knew the film had such a dedicated (and rabid) fanbase.
After its first weekend of release, the reaction to Disney’s latest live-action remake isn’t shocking, but it’s hard to shake off this feeling of misplaced anger. With Nani getting more to do and a streamlined final act, Lilo & Stitch proves that a great story transcends format. It worked in animation, and it works just as well here.
