J.J. Abrams and his son Henry Abrams writing Spider-Man comic

June 20, 2019 by Ricky Church

Over the last few days Marvel has been sharing a mysterious countdown for something Spider-Man related. Well, the countdown ended today and the comic behemoth has now revealed the project is a new Spidey miniseries being written by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams and his son Henry.

Working with the Abrams is Ultimate Spider-Man artist Sara Pichelli, the co-creator of Miles Morales, and colourist Dave Stewart. Making his introduction into the Spider-Man mythos is Cadaverous, a new villain who will “cause problems for Spider-Man, his alter-ego, Peter Parker, and his beloved Mary Jane Watson.” The miniseries will last for five issues and begin this September.

The duo spoke with the New York Times about the project as well where they revealed their hope is to “show Peter Parker in a way you haven’t seen him before.” Henry Abrams in particular seems excited to explore Spider-Man and bring him back more to his original roots, telling the NYT “Spider-Man is one of those superheroes where the more you read about him, for me at least, the less I understand him. He’s so anti-everything that you’d expect from a hero. I think Stan Lee said something about putting the human in superhuman. That is what we’re trying to do.”

This news comes follows on from the recent deal struck between J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot and WarnerMedia for $500 million. The deal will see WarnerMedia get first looks at all of the projects produced by Bad Robot, including films, television, video games and other multimedia, before it could be taken to any other studio. Whether or not Abrams will direct films exclusively for WarnerMedia or be allowed to direct jobs at other studios much like his previous deals.

What do you think of J.J. and Henry Abrams writing Spider-Man? Are you excited at the prospect of Abrams turning his hand to comics? Let us know in the comments below or on social media @FlickeringMyth…
