J.J. Abrams doubles down on his regret that Leia and Chewbacca didn’t embrace in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

December 18, 2019 by Liam Waddington

After directing two Star Wars films in the Sequel Trilogy – Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – J.J. Abrams has doubled down and admitted he still regrets the decision for Chewbacca to walk past General Leia Organa during the ending of The Force Awakens.

“I always look at what I have done and see things that I wish I had done better or differently,” Abrams told IGN Japan while reflecting on his time in the franchise. “I wish that Chewie hadn’t walked past Leia in the third act of The Force Awakens after Han died. There are things all over the place I always know I could have done better, but that’s part of learning, I guess.”

The scene in question which brought criticism to Abrams involved Leia Organa hugging Rey while Chewbacca didn’t acknowledge the General and attended to a wounded Finn instead, despite Han Solo being murdered by his son Ben/Kylo Ren.

Do you wish Chewie had embraced Leia during that scene instead of attending to Finn? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
