Jake Gyllenhaal to make stage musical debut in Little Shop of Horrors

April 15, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Jake Gyllenhaal’s recent career has been stellar, with his roles in films such as Prisoners, Enemy and Nightcrawler earning him acclaim and new-found respectability amongst some of the “naysayers” he had in his early career. One of his next roles, though, will see him tackle a different monster.

Gyllenhaal is set to make his musical stage debut in an off-Broadway performance of the classic comedy-horror Little Shop of Horrors, most notably successful in its 1986 musical incarnation. Gyllenhaal is set to take on the role of Seymour Krelborn, made famous by Rick Moranis in the 1986 film.

Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam will play the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello D.D.S, played by comedy legend Steve Martin in the film version, while Ellen Greene, who played bombshell Audrey in the musical film, will reprise her role once again. Chuck Cooper will voice Audrey II, the evil plant who ends to trying to take over the world.

Originally slated as a one-night-only performance, the Dick Scanlan directed production will now play three performances at New York’s City Center on July 1st and 2nd.
