James Gunn won’t reveal whether The Suicide Squad is a sequel or reboot

May 29, 2019 by Gary Collinson

When it was first announced that Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn would be heading to the DC Extended Universe to write and direct The Suicide Squad, it was said that the new movie would be a “relaunch” of the supervillain team-up, with producer Peter Safran subsequently describing it as a “total reboot” of the David Ayer directed-movie.

It’s since been revealed that Gunn has enlisted a number of cast members from the 2016 film, with Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) all reportedly reprising their roles, which of course casts some doubt on the movie’s status as “total reboot”.

Well, it seems that Gunn himself isn’t prepared to give anything away just yet, with the filmmaker tackling the question of whether The Suicide Squad is a sequel or a reboot during an interview with Entertainment Tonight by responding: “These terms are all so narrow, there’s so many terms… It is what it is. You’ll see in two years when it comes out.”

Along with Robbie, Courtney and Davis, The Suicide Squad will see a number of new additions to the DCEU including Idris Elba (The Dark Tower), John Cena (Bumblebee), David Dastmalchian (Ant-Man) and Daniela Melchior (Valor da Vida). It is set for release on August 6th 2021.
