James Wan confirms Aquaman 2 will continue to incorporate a little of his horror sensibilities

August 19, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While the first Aquaman film had some of director James Wan’s horror sensibilities with the Trench sequence, the filmmaker has confirmed the upcoming sequel will have another touch of horror.

When answering fan questions ahead of his appearance at DC FanDome on Twitter, Wan confirmed the sequel won’t lose its scary sequences as the story of exploring underwater worlds allows some horror to be implemented.

“Just like the first movie had a touch of my horror sensibility in it, in regards to the Trench sequence, I would say there will be a little bit of that in this next one,” Wan said. “I think it’s something that’s a big part of who I am, and it just naturally comes out in these kinds of films.”

Horror can seep into a movie like Aquaman because the story “takes place in these underwater worlds that can be very scary,” Wan said. “Naturally, my love for the horror genre means that I just latch myself to these scenes and try to kind of give them a little bit more of my ‘scary sauce’ on them.”

It comes as no surprise that Wan likes to incorporate some horror into his projects as the filmmaker built his career in the genre which included co-creating the Saw series and creating both The Conjuring Universe and the Insidious franchises. He returns to the horror genre for his next film Malignant, which is currently without a release date having originally been slated to open this month.

Aquaman 2 is set to be directed by James Wan with returning cast members Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), and Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master).
