James Wan reveals more details about his next horror, will be an original project

August 5, 2019 by Matt Rodgers

Its been a few years since James Wan created a new nightmare, with The Conjuring 2 being his last foray into a horror landscape he helped to shape, but now he has released a few tidbits via a since-deleted Facebook post relating to his next film.

Rumours had been circulating that he was to helm a covert reboot of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, especially considering the film was to be housed with Krueger’s IP owners New Line, but Wan debunked those with the following statement (via Bloody Disgusting):

“There’s been a bit of speculation as to what my next project is… all I’ll say is, I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets.”

He teased “That’s all I’ll say for now”, along with some location scouting photographs which have also been deleted.

It’s fair to say that Wan has been behind two of the genre’s more game-changing franchises, with 2004’s Saw spawning sequels and copycats, and the superb Insidious kick-starting a wave of old-school scares that launched The Conjuring Universe, so for him to announce an original property in this most cyclical and repetitive of genres, is an exciting prospect indeed.
