Jason Blum and Danny McBride discuss the inevitable Halloween sequel

October 28, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With Halloween proving to be a huge success for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, the horror reboot having already topped $100 million at the domestic box office, it’s surely only a matter of time until we get official confirmation that Michael Myers will be back for another outing.

Speaking to The Wrap, Blumhouse chief and producer Jason Blum has revealed that they are “dying” to get moving with a sequel, while co-writer Danny McBride added that he and director David Gordon Green are already tossing around ideas for a second film.

“It’s hard to make a great movie, period, and I always say, make a great movie first and we’ll figure out a franchise after,” said Blum. “Of course we would want to make a sequel, in fact, we’re dying to make a sequel . . . there are a lot of people that have to be in the same mindset as us. Nothing’s been set in stone, but we’re certainly going to try.”

“We definitely have ideas of what we would do,” added McBride. “I think we did not allow ourselves to really indulge those ideas until the movie came out. We just wanted to put all our hopes and dreams in having this film stick the landing. But we do have thoughts and ideas of what we could possibly do. We hadn’t invested a ton of time on them, but now we’re being asked to figure it out. There are definitely talks on whether we will do more of them and we’re just trying to see what best makes sense.”

Master of horror John Carpenter will executive produce and serve as creative consultant on this film, joining forces with cinema’s current leading producer of horror, Jason Blum (Get Out, Split, The Purge, Paranormal Activity). Inspired by Carpenter’s classic, filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride crafted a story that carves a new path from the events in the landmark 1978 film, and Green also directs.

Halloween is directed by David Gordon Green from a script by Green and Danny McBride. In addition to the returning Jamie Lee Curtis (Laurie Strode) and Nick Castle (Michael Myers), the film stars Judy Greer (War for the Planet of the Apes), Andi Matichak (Orange Is the New Black), Will Patton (Shots Fired), Virginia Gardner (Runaways), Miles Robbins (Mozart in the Jungle), Dylan Arnold (Mudbound) and Drew Scheid (Stranger Things).
