Jason Momoa and David Leitch team for The Pirate

August 22, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Can The Pirate take fight choreography-focused action films to the high seas? Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios has acquired a swashbuckling hot spec script.

Leading the charge in terms of production are Jason Momoa and David Leitch, who are coming on to produce the film from a script Will Dunn. The outlet confirms Leitch and Kelly McCormick are in negotiations to produce under their 87North banner, while Momoa is also in talks to produce from his On the Roam banner.

Little is known about the project, but it is being described as “The Raid set on a pirate ship.” For those who don’t know, The Raid is a 2011 Indonesian action film; it put intense fight scenes at the forefront of the production, think John Wick before John Wick. As yet, there’s no word as to whether Momoa will star in the film, or if his involvement will be restricted to a producing capacity.

Leitch is currently directing the action-thriller How to Rob a Bank for Amazon MGM, while Momoa will soon begin filming Legendary’s Street Fighter movie.
