Jeff Goldblum talks The Grandmaster role in Thor: Ragnarok

June 7, 2016 by Scott J. Davis

With the release of the long-awaited sequel Independence Day: Resurgence now only a few weeks away, star Jeff Goldblum has been doing the rounds promoting the film. But attention has also switched the news that the actor has joined the third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok, and Empire spoke to him about his role in the film.

“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells,” states Goldblum with regards to his character The Grandmaster. “I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching. [Director] Taika Waititi is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!”

The actor also said that he will be filming for “three weeks or a month” during the shoot which is scheduled to take place in Australia.

Recent rumours have reported that The Grandmaster, a member of the Elders of the Universe, “has an obsession with playing games” including gladiatorial ones.

Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and will star Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster and Karl Urban as Skurge. It is set for release on November 3rd, 2017.
