Jeffrey Wright and Octavia Spencer to star in Death of a Salesman

August 21, 2025 by EJ Moreno

Chinonye Chukwu and Tony Kushner’s big-screen adaptation of Death of a Salesman has found its lead as Deadline has revealed that Jeffrey Wright and Octavia Spencer are set to star in the production from Focus Features and Amblin.

Death of a Salesman is a tragic play written by Arthur Miller in 1949. It explores the disillusionment of the American Dream through the life of Willy Loman, a struggling salesman in his 60s, who cannot accept the reality of his failures and clings to an illusion of success. Wright will lead as Willy Loman, and Spencer will play his wife, Linda Loman.

Death of a Salesman is one of the most significant American plays of the 20th century. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1949. Arthur Miller labeled it a “tragedy of the common man,” highlighting the struggles of an ordinary individual rather than a noble figure.

László Benedek’s 1951 movie, featuring Fredric March as Willy and Mildred Dunnock as Linda, received five Academy Award nominations. The play was later brought to television in a 1985 adaptation, with Dustin Hoffman and Kate Reid portraying Willy and Linda, respectively.
