Jerrod Carmichael in negotiations to join Transformers 5 cast

April 21, 2016 by Justin Cook

Jerrod Carmichael, one of the most successful young comedians working in the business today, is reportedly in negotiations to join the cast of Michael Bay’s Transformers 5. The Wrap learned of the casting from “individuals familiar” with the project, similar to their scoop from around a week ago about Nickelodeon star Isabela Moner being sought after to play the female lead.

It seems safe to assume that Carmichael will play the role of the comic relief, just as comedian T.J. Miller did in the franchise’s last entry, Transformers: Age of Extinction. While Michael Bay has had some problems with finding the right balance between comedy and action in his past films, Carmichael is a strong talent who will undoubtedly add his own unique brand of humour to the film.

After breaking out in 2014’s Neighbors, Carmichael landed his own NBC show, The Carmichael Show, which is in the middle of its second season. Later this year, he will be popping up in The Masterpiece (formerly titled The Disaster Artist) and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

The movie’s plot picks up right where Age of Extinction left off and is set to start shooting next month. While Mark Wahlberg will reprise his role as Cade Yeager, it’s currently unclear if his co-stars from the previous film Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor will be back as well.

Transformers 5 sees Bay directing from a script by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway (Iron Man) and Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down). It is set for release on June 23rd 2017 and will be followed by a Bumblebee spinoff on June 8th 2018 and an as-yet-unrevealed Transformers project on June 28th 2019.
