Jessica Jones showrunner talks plans for a second season and Defenders

November 19, 2015 by Luke Owen

Ahead of the show hitting Netflix in all regions tomorrow (read our review of the first episode here), Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has been talking about where the show could go if it gets a second season, and how it ties into The Defenders.

“Truthfully, no one knows where [Defenders] was going to end up, and we certainly didn’t putting together Jessica Jones,” she told Deadline. “It’s funny because it didn’t play in at all, except that occasionally us writers in the room would go, “Gosh, I wonder if the story we just came up for that there’s no room for in our series, maybe The Defenders can use it.” But there are no Defenders yet. There is a plan for it, what the story is going to be, but I’m not a part of it.”

Debuting seven months ago, Daredevil received a lot of praise from fans and critics alike, prompting Marvel and Netflix to announce a second season which is now in production. Could Jessica Jones get a second run before Defenders?

“God willing, yeah. I’d love to do a Season 2 of this. I would love to do a Season 2,” she said. “I would hope to further expand on the ensemble, and on Jessica’s world. She ends in a very different place than she started off. She’s still going to be Jessica Jones — that is not going to change. She will continue to drink and make mistakes, and accidentally drop people onto train tracks, but something has changed for her by the end of this season, and I’d just love to explore that in the second season.”

Jessica Jones hits Netflix on November 20th and features a cast that includes Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter (The Following) as Luke Cage, David Tennant (Doctor Who) as Kilgrave / Purple Man, Rachael Taylor (Transformers) as Trish Walker / Hellcat, Eka Darville (The Originals) as Malcolm, Erin Moriarty (The Kings of Summer) as Hope, Wil Traval (Red Widow) as Simpson and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) as Hogarth.
