Jim Carrey-produced 1970’s comedy show I’m Dying Up Here picked for pilot by Showtime

August 12, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Variety is reporting that Showtime has picked up I’m Dying Up Here, a new hour-long TV project set in and around the 1970’s comedy scene, produced by comedy legend Jim Carrey (The Mask, Dumb and Dumber).

The project is set to be officially announced at this week’s Television Critics Association press tour, with the project based on the title novel by William Knoedelseder and is written by former stand-up Dave Flebotte. Carrey will serve as an executive producer.

The show will delve into the Golden Age of Los Angeles stand-up comics in the 70’s, a period when a lot of today’s most-reverred comedians got their starts. Jonathan Levine (50/50) will direct the pilot.

Showtime boss David Nevins said on the show: “The 1970s L.A. comedy scene gave rise to some of the biggest and most influential performers of the last half-century… Who better than Jim Carrey and Dave Flebotte, who were both there, to tell the story of that special era along with the complicated and talented performers that dared to grab an open mic.”
