Johannes Roberts’ new horror film Primate to star Oscar winner Troy Kotsur

July 11, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Johannes Roberts is back with another horror film, and he’s got an Oscar winner attached as Troy Kotsur (CODA) will lead the upcoming feature Primate from a script Roberts co-wrote with Ernest Riera.

Little is known about the project, but given the title and Roberts’ history with animal-focused horror, it seems safe to assume we could see something along those lines. Stay tuned for more plot details as they come.

Troy Kotsur is a deaf American actor who has worked since the ’80s before his mega breakout role as a guest in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. He followed it up with the Best Picture-winning CODA in 2021. Kotsur won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for that film, making him the first male deaf actor to win an Oscar.

Horror-producing titan Walter Hamada will head the production of Primate. As per Deadline, the project falls under Hamada’s exclusive first-look deal with Paramount. The company will see Hamada serve as “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low-to-mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.”

Roberts is best known for breakout horror hits like 47 Meters Down and its sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and the polarizing Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Kotsur meanwhile will next appear in Season 3 of the Apple TV+ series Foundation.
