John David Washington says Tenet and Inception are “in-laws” rather than a sequel

May 29, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Since the initial reveal of Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, Tenet, fans have speculated that the film could be a secret sequel to Nolan’s Inception. Now, one of the stars of Tenet has weighed in on this popular fan theory and offered an interesting connection.

In a recent interview with Esquire, John David Washington revealed that there is some connection between Tenet and Inception but refused to confirm or deny the possibility that Nolan’s latest project is a follow-up to 2010’s blockbuster hit.

“I’d say [Tenet] is an in-law to Inception,” Washington explained. “They’re related by marriage. They get together for Thanksgivings, family barbecues, like that kind of thing. Other than that, one lives in Europe, the other one lives in Compton.”

While Washington didn’t provide a definitive answer, the comparison between Tenet and Inception is interesting given that both titles use the manipulation of time and reality to achieve a certain goal. Additionally, whether the use of an “in-law” connection means they share plot details or characters will most likely remain under wraps until the film is released later this year.

What do you think of John David Washington’s comments? Do you think there will be a connection between Tenet and Inception? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.

Tenet is set for release on July 17th 2020.
