Joker continues march towards $1 billion after another strong box office weekend

November 3, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Five weekends into its run and Joker continues to impress at the box office, with the Joaquin Phoenix-led comic book adaptation adding a further $50 million this frame to push its global total to $934 million.

Joker already became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time last month when it surpassed Deadpool, and given its strong hold – not to mention the fact it is expected to be a big player in awards season – it looks all but assured at this point that the film will go on to reach the $1 billion mark before the end of its run.

Joker has also now overtaken Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($867 million) to become the fourth-biggest DC film ever behind The Dark Knight ($1 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08 billion) and Aquaman ($1.1 billion), and considering its budget – just $55 million – it’s almost certainly DC’s most profitable.

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
