Jon Bernthal on the future of The Punisher, wants to “push the envelope”

April 1, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Following on from his show-stealing turn in the second season of Daredevil, Jon Bernthal has been speaking to Complex about the future of Frank Castle, stating that he wants to “push the envelope” as Marvel further explores The Punisher.

“For me, it’s not a question of what they want to do with a character, it’s more, how are they going to do it, and who’s going to be the ones to do it. This character is in my bones now, he’s in my blood. If they want to go forward in any way, for me it’s just really going to be about making sure we do it in a way that’s raw and intense. I want to push the envelope. I wanna alienate more of the audience and try to bring them back.”

As yet, we don’t know where we’ll see The Punisher next; in January, it was rumoured that Bernthal would be headlining his own Netflix series, although Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb played down the claims the following month.

Just when Matt thinks he is bringing order back to the city, new forces are rising in Hell’s Kitchen. Now the Man Without Fear must take on a new adversary in Frank Castle and face an old flame – Elektra Natchios. Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.
