Joseph Kosinski set to direct new Miami Vice movie

April 29, 2025 by Matt Rodgers

Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is attached to direct a new Miami Vice movie for Universal Pictures.

According to Deadline the F1 helmer will head to The Sunshine State to direct a script by Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy.

Originally a glossy, ultra-stylistic crime drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann for NBC, Miami Vice ran for five seasons between 1984 and 1989. It starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as his partner Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, two undercover detectives infiltrating the crime scene in Miami, Florida.

Michael Mann would go on to direct his own feature film adaptation in 2006, which was headlined by Colin Farrell and Jamie Fox. The movie received mixed reviews and only grossed $164.2 million at the worldwide box-office, off a reported budget of $135 million. However, the intervening years have been kind to Miami Vice, with a wider appreciation growing for the movie.

We might have to wait some time to find out who the latest iterations of Crockett and Tubbs will be, as Kosinski is attached to multiple projects, including a third Top Gun movie and a Jerry Bruckheimer produced UFO thriller.

In the meantime, let us know who you’d like to play the two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
