Joss Whedon boldly calls Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode “the best thing I’ve done”

May 26, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Director of billion dollar films like The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron and a classic cult series like Firefly, Joss Whedon says nothing compares to his Season 5 episode of the iconic series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, ‘The Body’ – a widely-acclaimed episode from Whedon, which deals with the tragic loss of one of the show’s most prominent characters.

Whedon recently sat down to speak with Metro and opened up about the emotionally powerful episode of television. The filmmaker broke down various aspects of the episode’s intricate storytelling and talked about drawing from his trauma when creating this overall feeling.

Whedon explains to Metro, “My mother died when I was 27 in a car crash. But I didn’t really think about mining [the experience] until around season three.”

During the chat, Whedon went on to state that he believes, “[The Body] is probably the best thing I’ve done and the best thing I will ever do, and I’m OK with that. You know, there are worse epitaphs.”

For someone who’s helped create some of the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time, it will shock many people to hear that Whedon feels this is the best thing he’s created. That goes to show you that sometimes the power of personal storytelling triumphs over the money and popularly of anything else.

Joss Whedon is currently serving as executive producer and creator of The Nevers. The series is described as “an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.” The series will premiere on HBO in 2021.
