Ever since the Karl Urban-led Dredd film released in 2012, many fans have called for a sequel. The movie was very well received critically, but didn’t exactly make a killing at the box-office. Not long ago, Karl Urban himself revealed on Twitter that plans for a sequel were dead:
Dredd update : Unfortunately a sequel is no closer to happening , options have been discussed but there is no sequel in " development " .

So needless to say, it was an exciting development to hear that a TV show was being developed in the form of Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, and will likely be available through a streaming service such as Netflix, or Amazon. Now, what we don’t know is the cast (Karl Urban is not attached to the film at this time), or any story details. However, Judge Dredd franchise producer Jason Kingsley recently sat down with gamesradar.com to let fans know when we can expect the show to be complete:
“Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard. My best guess is that it’s at least two years away. But we’re so early in the process that things could happen a bit faster, or much more slowly.”
The producer also discussed the style of the show, and stressed the dark, and macabre tone that the show will take: “Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore. The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted. It’s a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell.”
Mr. Kingsley is absolutely right about the difficulty of trying to fit dense lore into a two-hour movie. It’s becoming more, and more clear that some comic-book properties really belong on television. It gives them room to breathe. Hopefully we will see Karl Urban making a triumphant return, and further news on this promising series very soon.
