Jurnee Smollett to executive produce and star in thriller Lou for Netflix

April 29, 2021 by Ricky Church

It has been a couple of years since there was any update on Bad Robot’s Lou, but Deadline has reported that Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country) has joined the film as both its lead star and an executive producer. She joins Allison Janney (Mom) in the film for Netflix.

Lou follows a mother who teams up with her neighbour to rescue rescue her kidnapped daughter. The official synopsis reads “A young girl is kidnapped. Her mother, with no other option, teams up with the mysterious older woman next door to pursue the kidnapper – a journey into the wilderness that will test their limits and expose dark and shocking secrets from their pasts.”

The script was written by Maggie Cohn (American Crime Story) and will be directed by Anna Foerster (Underworld: Blood Wars). Bad Robots’ J.J. Abrams, Jon Cohen and Hannah Minghella are producing the film with Smollett, Janney, Braden Aftergood and Lindsey Weber executive producing.

Smollett was recently nominated for Best Actress in a TV Drama for a Critics Choice award as well as a SAG ensemble for her role as Leti Lewis in HBO’s Lovecraft Country. She also starred in last year’s Warner Bros. DC film as Black Canary in Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey.
