Keri Russell’s The Diplomat returns in season 3 trailer

September 19, 2025 by Ricky Church

Netflix has released the trailer for the third season of its hit political thriller series The Diplomat starring Keri Russell. The preview sees Russell’s ambassador Kate Wyler settle into her new government role following the President’s death and the flawed Vice President becoming commander in chief of the United States.

Joining the third season is Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Todd Penn, the First Gentleman, and Aiden Turner (The Hobbit Trilogy) in an undisclosed role. Check out the trailer and promotional images below…

The Diplomat premiered in 2023 and quickly became a hit for Netflix, already renewing it for a fourth season. The series is created by Debora Cahn with Russell also serving as an executive producer. The third season will premiere on October 16th with eight episodes. Watch the trailer below…

In Season 3, ambassador Kate Wyler lives the particular nightmare that is getting what you want. She just accused Vice President Grace Penn of hatching a terrorist plot and admitted she’s after the VP’s job. But now the President is dead, Kate’s husband Hal may have inadvertently killed him, and Grace Penn is leader of the free world. None of this slows Hal’s campaign to land Kate the vice presidency. Kate steps into a role she never wanted, with a freedom she never expected, an increasingly complicated friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, and an unnerving bond with First Gentleman Todd Penn.

The Diplomat stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Hal Wylder, Allison Janney as Grace Penn, David Gyasi as British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn and Aiden Turner.

The Diplomat will premiere on Netflix on October 16th.
