Kevin Feige on integrating Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe

June 28, 2015 by Gary Collinson

This past week brought us the news that British actor Tom Holland (The Impossible) has secured the role of Peter Parker for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War and subsequent Spider-Man reboot, with Marvel chief Kevin Feige subsequently offering up a few details on how his studio is working alongside Sony for the latest take on the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler.

Well, Feige has now been speaking further on the matter during an interview with Zap2It, confirming that the 2017 Sony movie will take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe – which of course opens up the door to MCU characters appearing in Sony’s solo movies: “The biggest thing is that it takes place in this universe. It’s the first time that you’ll be able to see Spider-Man like he was in the comics, as a very different type of hero when compared to the other heroes in the universe. Up until this point in the other Spidey films, he was the only hero, and now he’s not. Now he’s a kid in Queens with these powers and has other superheroes to look to.”

Marvel will of course waste little time in introducing Spidey to these other heroes, and Feige also dropped a few hints on what we can expect from Spider-Man’s role in Civil War: “Does he want to be like these other characters? Does he want nothing to do with these other characters? How does that impact his experience, being this grounded but super powerful hero? Those are all the things that Stan Lee and Steve Ditko played with in the first 10 years of his comics, and that now we can play with for the first time in a movie.”

Captain America: Civil War is set for release on May 6th 2016, followed by the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man reboot on July 28th 2017.
