Key & Peele will end after this current season

July 25, 2015 by Justin Cook

Comedy Central’s popular sketch comedy series Key & Peele will officially be ending after this current season.

The show, which began its run in 2012, is now in its fifth season. The final episode of the series will air sometime in September.

Keegan-Michael Key, co-creator and star of the show, confirmed the news while speaking to The Wrap. Key said, “This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us. It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie.”

It sounds like Key and Jordan Peele still plan on doing other projects with one another, which makes sense considering how this March a feature film based on their sketch “Substitute Teacher” was announced to be in the works. On that topic, Key said, “There will be Key and Peele productions coming up. We’re doing the reboot of Police Academy, and there’s a TV show in the works that me might do for Comedy Central. There’s lots of stuff we have cooking up.”

There’s no denying that over the past few years Key and Peele have emerged as two of the strongest performers working in comedy. From “East/West College Bowl” to “Pizza Order,” the pair has created a countless amount of clever and memorable sketches and characters for their show.

Recently, the show earned Emmy nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series and Outstanding Variety Series. Key also garnered his first nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The two, who initially met during their six years together on MADtv, have gone on to star in other projects since the launch of their show as well. Key has appeared in Let’s Be Cops, The Lego Movie, Tomorrowland, Pitch Perfect 2 and Vacation, while Peele has popped up in Fargo, Bob’s Burgers and Modern Family.
