Leonardo DiCaprio producing a Captain Planet movie

October 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Paramount Pictures is teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way to produce a big screen reboot of the early 90s environmental cartoon Captain Planet, with Glen Powell (Scream Queens) and writing partner Jono Matt set to pen the script.

According to THR, the movie will take place years after the conclusion of the Captain Planet and the Planeteers TV show, “with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need them”.

Given its environmental themes, Captain Planet seems a perfect fit for DiCaprio, who will be producing the movie alongside Powell and Jennifer Davisson Killoran of Appian Way.

A Captain Planet movie was previously in development at Sony back in 2013, only for the rights to lapse before the studio could get it off the ground.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran for three seasons between 1990 and 1992, with a follow-up series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, then running for three more seasons through to 1996.
