As well as dethroning The Fate of the Furious for the biggest worldwide opening weekend in history with its haul of $640 million, Marvel’s superhero epic Avengers: Infinity War also scored the biggest domestic debut of all time, grossing $257 million to take top spot from 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million).
To mark the new record, Lucasfilm has offered its congratulations to its fellow Disney subsidiary with the following post on Twitter, which shows Star Wars passing the baton to Marvel Studios as Rey hands Iron Man a lightsaber.
