Luther movie is currently scheduled to begin production in September, says Idris Elba

May 25, 2021 by Liam Waddington

During an interview with Variety, Idris Elba, star and producer of the award-winning BBC series, has revealed that production on the long-gestating Luther movie could begin this year in September.

Elba said producers are “very close to pulling the green light on production”, adding that “we [Luther’s cast and crew] go into production, fingers crossed, in September.”

The Luther series follows Elba as DCI John Luther, a talented yet obsessive and sometimes overly violent detective who has never been able to prevent himself from being consumed by the darkness of the crimes with which he deals while also struggling to separate his personal and professional lives.

The critically acclaimed BBC series premiered its first season in 2010 and ran for a total of five seasons, debuting its latest season in 2019. However, the future of the TV series is currently unknown as the U.K. broadcaster still hasn’t ordered a sixth season and instead is seemingly interested in developing a feature film to continue the story.

The Luther film is currently a joint production of 20th Century Fox Television, BBC Worldwide Productions, and Chernin Entertainment with Peter Chernin, Julie Gardner, Katherine Pope, Jane Tranter, and Elba himself serving as executive producers.
