Mark Hamill says the Star Wars prequels are more original than The Force Awakens

December 16, 2017 by Gary Collinson

To promote his return as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill has been chatting to Metro about the Star Wars saga, during which he has defended the much-maligned Prequel Trilogy, stating that Lucas’ movies were more original than Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“What I thought was great about the prequels was the different technology that I had never seen before. All that CGI. And the fact that [George Lucas] wasn’t trying to do the same experience all over again. I thought The Force Awakens did that more than the early ones, because it had that the girl from a different planet, the Death Star, the Cantina sequence. [J.J. Abrams] was trying to figure out what was it about the original movies that everybody loved. And that’s a different thought process than what George would have done. Because he would go, ‘I had a beginning, middle, and an end’.”

Hamill has previously expressed his disbelief towards the backlash to the prequels, stating that he was also “angry” about the way that the press and critics treated Jake Lloyd, who played Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace. Meanwhile, he’s also recently revealed that he disagreed with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson about Luke Skywalker’s role in the new film, and said that he wishes Disney had gone with George Lucas’ original outline for the Sequel Trilogy.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi sees returning cast members Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Tim Rose (Admiral Ackbar), Mike Quinn (Nien Nunb) and Warwick Davis joined by new additions Jimmy Vee (Pan) as R2-D2, Kelly Marie Tran (Ladies Like Us) as Rose, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as DJ and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) as Vice Admiral Holdo.
