Mark Ruffalo says tension between Marvel and Universal is “prohibitive” to a solo Hulk movie

December 23, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Originally published December 23, 2015. Updated April 13, 2018.

Despite rumours for the past couple of years that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk would get his own movie, it was revealed earlier this year that Universal still hold the distribution rights to a solo movie. Ruffalo has now been speaking about the situation to Yahoo!, stating that tensions between Marvel Studios and Universal means that it “doesn’t look particularly promising” that we’ll see a sequel to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk any time soon.

“”I think they’ve been working on it. Marvel and Universal famously don’t get along very well, and so that’s working against us, definitely. But I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it’s a little prohibitive. And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn’t look particularly promising… Marvel and Universal are just not having a good time together right now.”

Ruffalo will however be back as The Hulk alongside Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder in the Phase Three threequel Thor: Ragnarok, and the actor gave a brief update on that project, stating: “They’re still writing the script. That’ll start shooting this summer. In June. There’s still a lot of work to do on that.”
