Marvel and Sony agree to Share Live-action Control of Spider-Man

February 17, 2015 by Gary Collinson

The entertainment world is not only diverse, but it also full of surprises and excitement. This was underlined last week by the shock announcement made by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, who confirmed that they had reached an agreement to share live-action control of the seminal character Spider-Man.

This is huge news for fans, who have hoped for more than a decade to see Spider-Man share the silver screen with Marvel’s spectacular cavalcade of superheroes. While he may have emerged as a Marvel comic book creation, Spider-Man has been licensed to Sony since 1999 and has not appeared alongside his contemporaries since.

The Story and the Reaction

The initial announcement triggered waves of rumour and discussion, as fans clamoured to find out how the arrangement would work. Although it was originally unclear, subsequent reports have helped to clarify the situation further and at least provide fans with something to go on. The most important point to note that the live-action rights to Spider-Man have not been sold or acquired, so Sony Pictures have retained full control over the financing, distribution and creative control of the character.

Instead, Sony has agreed to share the rights in exchange for a mutually convenient and beneficial arrangement. This means that absolutely no money has changed hands between the newly anointed partners, although whether this is the long-term plan remains slightly unclear. Instead, Marvel will benefit by being able to include arguably their most popular character in future film projects, while also driver higher merchandising revenues. In exchange, Sony is able to reignite a lucrative franchise by operating alongside Marvel Studios, which produced two of 2014’s highest grossing movies.

The Last Word

From Spider-Man slots to console games and Hollywood pictures, Spider-Man remains one of the most successful Marvel characters of all time. It therefore makes commercial sense for Sony to share his rights with his creators, as this enables both partners to benefit and drive higher profit margins. Still, it is refreshing and unusual to see such a deal struck between two global corporations, as its simplistic and mutually beneficial nature also helps to prioritise the needs of the fans.
