Marvel believes “the world is ready” for a gay superhero in the MCU

March 10, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With rumours circulating that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay actor for a lead role in next year’s franchise launcher The Eternals, Marvel Studios’ EVP of Production Victoria Alonso has told Variety that she believes the time is right for an LGBTQ superhero in the MCU.

“The world is ready, the world is ready,” said Alonso when asked about the possibility of a gay superhero, although she refused to confirm the Eternals rumours, stating that: “We are going to cast the best Eternals cast that we can and when we’re ready to announce it we promise you we will.”

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige had suggested last year that Marvel was looking to add a new LGBTQ character to the MCU as part of the studio’s push for more diversity and inclusivity, and given Alonso’s cagey response, it certainly seems plausible that The Eternals will be the movie to introduce said character.

The Eternals is set to be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider), with filming expected to get underway in September ahead of a release in 2020.
