Marvel never considered The New Mutants joining the MCU says director Josh Boone

September 1, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Josh Boone, the director of The New Mutants, says Disney and Marvel never planned for the film to become part of the MCU.

The New Mutants is finally available to the public after all these many months of delays and uncertainty. While the film started off life before Fox was purchased by Disney, the deal made it a possibility that New Mutants could become part of the MCU – the first X-Men property to do so.

However, despite rumours suggesting the film could be retconned into the MCU, it seems like this was never an option or considered by those in charge at Marvel and Disney. Speaking to Den of Geek, Josh Boone, director of the film, was asked if Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had any talks with him about bringing The New Mutants into the MCU family:

“No, not at all. I just really finished the process we’d already gotten kind of 70% of the way through before the merger happened. It was nice to have the retrospect of the year where I was off working on The Stand and doing other things to come back and look at it, because we sat there and did other little things here and there.”

It almost feels like a film that Marvel just wanted to get out before they start dealing seriously with the newly acquired characters from Fox. At least fans can finally see the movie and enjoy it for what it is. There will be plenty of opportunities for bringing in the mutants to the MCU down the road.

Twentieth Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive. Directed by Josh Boone (“The Fault in our Stars”) and written by Josh Boone & Knate Lee, “The New Mutants” stars: Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”); Anya Taylor-Joy (“Glass”); Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”); Alice Braga (“Predators”); Blu Hunt (“The Originals”); and Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”). The film is produced by Simon Kinberg, p.g.a., Karen Rosenfelt  and Lauren Shuler Donner with Stan Lee and Michele Imperato Stabile serving as executive producers.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.
