Marvel sets mystery film for 2028, is this Jake Schreier’s MCU X-Men?

June 20, 2025 by EJ Moreno

When Marvel Studios sets a mysterious release date, fans all begin to question what could fill that spot. With the latest update on X-Men coming right before this new date was set, could we be heading towards the full MCU introduction our favorite mutants?

Disney announced this week that Marvel Studios is scheduled to release an untitled movie on Dec. 15, 2028. This marks Marvel’s return to releasing four films a year, as previously announced movies are planned for release in February, May, and November 2028.

Variety covered the story about the December 2028 film and also seemingly confirmed that Jake Schreier will direct an X-Men movie for Marvel. The two being linked so closely together could be a coincidence, but the mutants are having a moment, and it would be smart to jump on that film sooner rather than later. We reported back in May that Schreier was in the running for the gig, and Variety has now seemingly locked down that story.

Little is known about this planned X-Men film. Thunderbolts* Jake Schreier will helm a script written by Michael Lesslie, with Kevin Feige producing. No roster or castings have been teased as yet.

If you are craving the mutants before this rumored 2028 release, characters from the Fox X-Men films will be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, including Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops. That film is set for release on December 18yth, 2026.
