Marvel Studios releases official timeline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

November 19, 2018 by Gary Collinson

We’re now ten years and twenty films into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and for the most part Marvel Studios has done an excellent job of keeping its interconnected universe free of the kind of continuity errors that has plagued 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

That being said, a few issues have popped up over the years (most notably, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s ‘Eight Years Later’ title card, subsequently confirmed to have been a mistake), and in order to clear up any potential confusion, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige had promised last year that they would be publishing an official Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, which has now been released via the Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years book [read our review here].

So, if you’re planning a marathon, chronological order rewatch of the MCU, here’s the order to do so:

  • 1943-1945: Captain America: The First Avenger
  • 2010: Iron Man
  • 2011: Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor
  • 2012: The Avengers, Iron Man 3
  • 2013: Thor: The Dark World
  • 2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • 2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man
  • 2016: Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • 2016 through to 2017: Doctor Strange
  • 2017: Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War

With two films left in Phase Three of the MCU, we know that Captain Marvel is set to slot in between The First Avenger and Iron Man, taking place in the 1990s, while Avengers 4 is rumoured to take place – or start, at least – some five or so years after the ending of Avengers: Infinity War.
