Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War on course for biggest global opening weekend of all time

April 28, 2018 by Gary Collinson

After storming out of the gate and pulling in a hefty $134 million by close of play on Thursday, Marvel’s superhero epic Avengers: Infinity War now appears to be on course for the biggest global opening weekend of all-time.

The Joe and Anthony Russo-directed blockbuster grossed $106.7 million domestically on Friday (including Thursday previews of $39 million), as well as pushing its international gross to $178.5 million, giving it $285.2 million as of Friday.

Industry experts are now tipping the movie for a three-day domestic weekend of $245.6 million, which would put it just short of the record $247.9 million set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. A $300 million plus haul is expected from the international markets, meaning it would topple The Fate of the Furious‘ $541.9 million for the biggest worldwide opening in history.

Impressively, it will have done so without the lucrative Chinese market, which accounted for $190 million of The Fate of the Furious‘ opening. Infinity War does not open in China until May 11th
