Matt Reeves says The Batman will be a noir-driven detective version of The Dark Knight

June 28, 2017 by Ricky Church

With Matt Reeves out on the press tour for War for the Planet of the Apes, the director has been fielding a number of questions about his next project, the DC solo movie The Batman. Reeves already said a few days ago he’ll be influenced by director Alfred Hitchcock’s style of filmmaking, and now he has elaborated on that idea much further.

In an interview with New Trailer Buzz, Reeves revealed that his Batman film will be “noir-driven” and focus on Batman’s capabilities as a detective just as much as a crime fighter. He even drew a comparison between Batman and his Apes protagonist Caesar in how their actions are driven in a psychological way.

“I see a parallel, emotionally, between Caesar and Batman in that they’re both characters who are tortured and trying to sort of grapple within themselves to find a way to do the right thing in a very imperfect, and to some degree corrupt, world,” said Reeves. “And so it’s really that emotionality that I’m interested in.”

In regard to the film noir feel of Batman, Reeves said: “I want to do a very point of view-driven — you know, this film and with all films what I try to do in an almost Hitchcockian sense is to use the camera and use the storytelling so that you become the character and you empathize with that point of view, and I think there’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point-of-view-driven in a very, very powerful way that hopefully is going to connect you to what’s going on inside of his head and inside of his heart.”

Are you excited about the prospect of seeing a noir-driven, detective version of The Dark Knight with The Batman? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
