Matt Smith joins Star Wars: Starfighter opposite Ryan Gosling

August 6, 2025 by EJ Moreno

We have our new galactic villain.

Matt Smith looks to cement his name in the Star Wars legacy by joining the upcoming Shawn Levy-directed film, Star Wars: Starfighter. Deadline reports that Smith will star alongside Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth.

The exact details on who Matt Smith will play are being kept under wraps, but the outlet confirms he’ll play the villain of the film. Smith has been an actor for some time, becoming a fan-favorite for his roles in Doctor Who, Netflix’s The Crown, and the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. The next time, we’ll see the actor in Darren Aronofsky’s thriller Caught Stealing, in which he stars opposite Austin Butler.

Little is known about the project, except that Levy will direct and Jonathan Tropper penned the script. Revealed at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Starfighter is “set five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker.”

Casting for the film has ramped up in recent weeks as it nears its fall 2025 production date.

Star Wars: Starfighter is set for release on May 28, 2027.
